In the RDI programs, we talk a lot about mindfulness; the ability to be present, in the moment and aware of our thoughts, feelings, actions and reactions. This article shares a few ideas about mindful parenting and why the practice is helpful to parents and children.

Mindfulness allows us to:

  • Step back from the situation, observe our emotional reaction, take a breath and act in a calmer, more rational manner

  • Be more attuned and sensitive to our children

  • Learn to be present, putting away our devices and really listening to what they have to say.

  • Cultivate mindfulness in our children starting at a very young age.

In our RDI programs, we focus on being mindful; to think about our thinking and be more purposeful in the way we interact with our children in order to guide them. This is just good parenting, but is especially crucial when we have children with developmental issues.
